Mateu Healey-Parera, a 22-year-old student in the College of Architecture, Art and Planning, was arrested Saturday afternoon on the Syracuse University campus. Police found him in possession of a bolt-action rifle with a scope and 40 rounds of ammunition near the Schine Student Center. The arrest occurred while Healey-Parera was reportedly waiting for a bus to return to Ithaca. He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, which is a felony under New York State law. Investigations are ongoing to determine a motive and the origin of the firearm. Authorities have secured an extreme risk protection order, and a search of his residence was conducted. University officials from both Cornell and Syracuse have expressed deep concern regarding the incident. Healey-Parera was arraigned Sunday morning with bail set at $50,000 cash. There is currently no ongoing threat to the public.
