President Michael Kotlikoff released yet another official statement addressing the controversial April 30 confrontation on campus. After initially maintaining that his vehicle made no contact with anyone, Kotlikoff admitted that social media footage forced him to realize a student was directly behind his car as he backed up. The administration announced it will not pursue Campus Code of Conduct complaints against the Cornell students involved. Kotlikoff stated that public hearings would grant the protesters the attention they are seeking, claiming the disciplinary process would further divide the campus. While defending the university’s restrictive Expressive Activity Policy, the president noted that, in retrospect, he should have remained locked inside his vehicle and called the police.
