The Board of Trustees has finished its review of the April 30 incident involving President Michael Kotlikoff and a group of student protesters. The committee cleared the President of wrongdoing, and found the CUPD investigation was unbiased and followed proper procedures. It concluded that the actions of the students involved were “inconsistent with university policies” on expressive activity and safety.
The Tompkins County District Attorney has also determined that no criminal charges are warranted for any individuals involved in the matter. President Kotlikoff declined to pursue a formal complaint against the students, which effectively ends the possibility of internal disciplinary action against them.
Students involved in the confrontation were protesting what they describe as draconian measures to stifle free speech on campus. These tensions have remained high following a year of suspensions and attempts by the Trump administration to deport student activists. The university maintains that while debate is essential, it must occur within the bounds of its regulations, and the law.
