The proposed freeze requires Ithaca Common Council approval and would pause permits until University administration accounts for its sexual violence protocols and releases new safety standards. Several alderpersons have already voiced support. The push follows fierce backlash over the administration’s handling of the incident after a Sept. 14 lawsuit filed by a former Cornell student. City police confirmed Monday that the University never contacted them regarding the alleged crimes, prompting the Tompkins County District Attorney to formally reopen a criminal investigation.
