Sad news out of Cambridge today as the academic world mourns the loss of Nuno Loureiro, the director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. The 47-year-old physics professor was found shot to death in his Brookline home on Monday night, with authorities launching an immediate homicide investigation.
Loureiro was a titan in the field of nuclear science, dedicating his career to the complex physics of fusion energy and the behavior of the universe at its edges. His work was instrumental in moving the world closer to clean, limitless energy, and he was recently recognized with a Presidential Early Career Award.
While speculation regarding motives is circulating online, police have not yet named a suspect. This tragedy strikes close to home for anyone in higher education, reminding us of the fragility of life even in our intellectual hubs. Cornell sends its deepest sympathies to our peers at MIT as they grapple with this senseless violence and the immeasurable loss to the scientific community.
