The United Nations has formally raised “serious concern” regarding alleged human rights violations at Cornell. In a letter to President Kotlikoff, UN Special Rapporteurs highlighted the cases of Momodou Taal and Amandla Thomas-Johnson, two international students who fled the country amid deportation threats and disciplinary crackdowns.
Taal, a Ph.D. student, had previously sued the Trump administration for violating his First Amendment rights before being told to surrender to ICE. The UN experts warn that structural changes at universities have created a “climate of fear” that disproportionately silences international students and represses pro-Palestinian solidarity.
The intervention follows a complaint filed by University of Chicago law clinics, which accused Cornell of violating freedoms of assembly and expression. While the student body recently voted overwhelmingly for an independent disciplinary system to curb administrative overreach, the University has yet to publicly respond to the UN’s inquiry.
