Joseph “Joe” Halpern, a pioneering figure in the Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, passed away on February 13th at age 72 following a long battle with cancer. A member of the faculty for 30 years, Halpern was a world-renowned researcher in artificial intelligence, reasoning, and uncertainty. Beyond his massive contributions to theoretical computer science, Halpern was a dedicated mentor and beloved teacher. He previously served as the chair of the Department of Computer Science and was known for his multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems. May his memory be a blessing.
