Daniel Gold passed away on Feb. 16 at 78. Gold arrived at Cornell in 1986 and spent over three decades shaping the Department of Asian Studies until his retirement in 2021. He was a leading scholar of South Asian religion and culture, focusing on North Indian devotional life and Hindi poetry. Beyond his books and films, Gold was known for bringing his personal meditation practice into the classroom. His course on meditation in Indian culture was a favorite among students. Gold served as both department chair and director of the South Asia Program during his tenure. He continued his research and publishing well into his final months. May he rest in peace.
