Former Cornell student Bilguun Enkhbayar was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday following his conviction for first-degree rape and second-degree burglary. The sentencing follows a week-long jury trial regarding a September 2024 incident where Enkhbayar broke into a female student’s dormitory room. Enkhbayar’s indictment stated he “knowingly and unlawfully [entered] a dorm room with the intent to commit a crime therein and [engaged] in vaginal sexual contact with another person who was incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless.” In December of last year, Cornellians Only exclusively confirmed Enkhbayar’s background and identity. Our reporting first identified him as a member of the Class of 2027 majoring in Global & Public Health Sciences and provided the community with the first look at the predator’s likeness and academic history. Before his arrest, Enkhbayar was a celebrated international scholar from Mongolia who received a $328,000 scholarship to attend Cornell. He maintained a public persona centered on empowerment and wellness, allegedly serving as a co-founder of the Cornell Capital Club and operating an educational NGO. The court ordered his sentences to run concurrently, resulting in a maximum of eight years behind bars despite a prosecution request for fifteen. Upon his release, Enkhbayar will be required to complete ten years of post-release supervision. What do you think? Is this a fair punishment for his crimes?
