Early Monday morning, anonymous activists smashed the glass entrance of Day Hall and covered surrounding walls in red paint, targeting Cornell’s administrative headquarters over the university’s handling of the 2024 Chi Phi sexual assault case.
Spray-painted messages outside the building read “SMASH THE PATRIARCHY” and “AT CORNELL RAPISTS ARE PROTECTED PROTESTORS ARE EXPELLED,” while an overhead security camera was blacked out with paint. Cornell Police cleared the scene shortly before 4 a.m.
In a manifesto sent to The Cornell Daily Sun, the activists called for the abolition of IFC Greek life, degree revocations for the accused fraternity members, and the immediate resignation of top administrators, including President Michael Kotlikoff and Vice President Ryan Lombardi. The group sharply criticized Day Hall leadership for handing multi-year suspensions to peaceful student protestors while allegedly letting students accused of sexual assault off with disciplinary essays.
Cornell released a statement addressing the incident, saying the university understands the community’s frustration but maintaining that “damaging property is not the answer” as an official investigation gets underway.
